The love affair with real estate in Canada isn’t going anywhere any time soon. However, romanticizing the character and history of a home is a recipe for trouble, and heartbreak. Put another way, you can’t judge a book by its cover. The cute and quirky features that make us fall in love with a home are not indicative of that home’s overall quality and condition.
To buy a character home—and be happy living in it over the long run—you have truly be an ‘Old House Person.’ Old House People have a high tolerance for risk and imperfection. Asbestos in the attic? No big deal. Galvanized pipes that need replacing? Happy to do it! Curling shingles? Yep, Old House People know all about roof problems and expect them.
Structural issues? Not so much, but that’s what a home inspection is for. Old House People know this too.
If you’re not an Old House Person, my best advice is to be tough with yourself and move on from the romance. I’ve seen in a hundred times and it just never works out. In the end, you’ll be much happier with newer construction …and the modernized building codes that come with it.
