The London Road Neighbourhood is an L-shaped, Southside community bounded by 9 Avenue, 13 Street, 3 Avenue, 11 Street, 6 Avenue, and Scenic Drive.
Known for its character homes and its tree-canopied streets, this charming Southside neighbourhood is one of Lethbridge’s oldest. In fact, the western half of the community was included in the original town plot survey conducted in 1885 and 1886. About half of the original homes were built before 1914, resulting in an eclectic mix of single, 2-storey, and even 3-storey homes, many clad with wooden siding.
Most homes in London Road are single-family, but there are a handful of medium density residences, including duplexes, townhomes, condos, and apartment buildings.
There is also a London Road Neighbourhood Association that aims to maintain “the qualities of the historical London Road neighbourhood that make it one of the finest communities in the City”.
Amenities: London Road has three parks: London Road Park, Kiwanis Park (also known as Green Acres Park), and Kinsmen Park, the largest of the three. Kinsmen Park was once affectionately known as “Tin-Tin Park”, a nod to the old Tin-Tin grocery store on 9 Avenue South, which is now Urban Grocer.
The Civic Centre field, which includes a track, is just north of the neighbourhood.
London Road is home to several types of businesses and local organizations, including the YWCA and London Road Market. Because London Road borders downtown, local residents enjoy quick access to hundreds of other businesses and services.
Churches: Two churches—Community of Christ and St. Augustine’s Church—are located in the community, with several others nearby.
Five bus routes provide access to all of the city’s transit terminals, and much of the neighbourhood is within walking distance of the main terminal downtown.
Schools: There are no schools in the neighbourhood, but Fleetwood Bawden Elementary School butts up to the community’s southern boundary, making it easily accessible to London Road families.
